Invitation to sit the Trans-Tasman Certificate of Proficiency in UEB 2019

The Braille Authorities of Australia and New Zealand are pleased to announce the 2019 Trans-Tasman Certificate of Proficiency in Unified English Braille. Australian and New Zealand applicants are invited to apply by the closing date of Monday 2 September 2019.

The examiners of The Trans-Tasman Certificate of Proficiency in Unified English Braille will ensure that materials are sent out to enable candidates to sit the examination on their selected week.

The first lot of papers will be sent out on Wednesday 25 September 2019 to enable candidates to work on the examination in the week of 30 September 2019

The second lot of papers will be sent out on Wednesday 2 October 2019 to enable candidates to work on the examination in the week of 7 October 2019.

Completed examination papers must be returned to the Examiners in either Australia or New Zealand by Tuesday 8 October 2019 or Tuesday 15 October 2019 depending on which week has been selected to sit the examination.

If for any reason the examination papers do not reach you within your selected timeframe please do not worry, simply contact the Examiner so that arrangements can be made to allow for date changes.

The examination consists of the following three sections:

Part A: Print to Braille

This section consists of three separate texts provided in print format (equivalent to approximately ten braille pages). Candidates are required to transcribe the three texts into braille.

Please note answers must be submitted in hard copy braille. Simulated braille is not accepted. Part A may be completed using a Perkins brailler or computer (see Application Form). Candidates who nominate to complete Part A using a computer with braille software program will be required to complete a statement confirming they used six-key entry with deactivation of the translation/proofreading bar.

Part B: Braille to Print

This section consists of a short article in braille which must be translated into print. This part of the examination must be typed for clarity.

Part C: Proofreading

This section consists of an article in braille containing approximately ten (10) errors. Candidates are required to identify and list the errors.

NOTE: This year for New Zealand candidates only, there will be a re-sit option for those who are unsuccessful. This trial re-sit option came about from feedback received and as with any trial this process will be reviewed in 2020.

Could candidates please advise on the Application Form if they are happy to have their names shared on the Braille Authority of New Zealand Aotearoa Trust (BANZAT) website.

For an application form or for any further information or queries please do not hesitate to contact the Examiner.
